Granai e città capitali al tramonto dell’Antico Regime2024-01-02T15:35:55+00:00Alida Clementemaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
Despite the progressive liberalisation of the grain trade, monumental public buildings for the storage of grain were erected in numerous European and Mediterranean capitals between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The essay illustrates some examples and highlights the specificity of late modern technical and political approaches to the management of stocks, which, far from appearing as remnants of mediaeval and early modern annona policies, reconfigure the problems of grain conservation and the function of public granaries within a framework of political centralisation, macroeconomic regulation and communication policy. Theoretically conceived as an instrument of intertemporal price arbitrage without interfering with the functioning of the market, these mammoth buildings, which dominate the urban fabric with their monumentality, seem to fulfil above all a symbolic function of food security, in example as an anti-panic device in times of food crises.
2023-10-18T00:00:00+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10360Manuals, journals, patents: development and international circulation of technical-constructive solutions for grain silos between the 19th and 20th centuries2024-01-02T15:35:49+00:00Stefania Landimaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
The grain silos typology first appeared during the second half of the 19th century in the United States. Since then, different construction techniques were experimented to ensure a higher fire resistance and structural strength. The exchange of knowledge between America and Europe, concerning the design and construction of this building typology, is a topic of great interest, but not yet duly investigated. For this reason, the present study aims to bring attention to it, starting with a focus on a crucial phase in the construction history, characterised by unprecedented advances: the period that goes from the last decade of the 19th century to the first two decades of the 20th century. In particular, the study will investigate the role in the development of the grain silo typology played by the US and German designers and builders, starting from the analysis of the manuals and journals which represented a major vehicle for the transmission of technical knowledge and patents.
2023-10-18T10:28:04+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10361Paesaggi urbano-portuali del grano. Magazzini e silos nel golfo di Napoli (1779-1967)2024-01-02T15:35:48+00:00Roberto Parisimaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
The essay deals with the theme of urban-port landscapes of wheat in Italy through the case study of Naples and its gulf. Starting from the scientific debate that develops in Italy around the early thirties of the twentieth century, the author traces in a long-term perspective the main architectural typologies of the port silos built in the Gulf of Naples, by the Bourbon Warehouses designed by Ferdinando Fuga in the late eighteenth century to the ‘modern’ cylindrical reinforced concrete silos which were built during the twentieth century in the seaports of Naples, Castellammare di Stabia and Torre Annunziata.
2023-10-18T10:52:56+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10364“Sentinelle della prateria”: i silos rurali negli Stati Uniti e in Canada*2024-01-02T15:35:47+00:00Manuel Vaquero Piñeiro, Barbara Gallimaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
The tall storage elevators that dot the interior plains of North America are part of a carefully planned network for the collection and distribution of grain. The elevators and the small towns adjacent to them were situated by rail-road companies during the late 19th century when the continent’s agricultural heartland was being settled. Increases in agricultural production, a shift in emphasis from domestic to export production, and technological change in grain storage and transportation have produced visible changes in the old system of grain elevators. Today, as in the past, decisions affecting location of grain-storage elevators on the landscape are worked out carefully to minimize transportation costs. In this transformation of the landscape, particular attention has been paid to the definition of construction techniques that have greatly influenced the redesign of the skylines of the American and Canadian prairies.
2023-10-18T14:28:04+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10365I silos granari del Gruppo Ferruzzi. Memoria di uno spazio industriale2024-01-02T15:35:54+00:00Francesca Castanò, Carmen Ceceremaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
The article analyses the experience of the Ferruzzi Group of Ravenna and the significant moments of growth and expansion on the Italian and international industrial scene, starting from the 1950s. Through the reconstruction of the events characterising the birth and development of the cereal activities of Serafino Ferruzzi, founder of the company, the aim is to outline the dense network of grain silos built in the main Italian ports, based on the Group’s multiple exchanges with foreign markets, especially South America. Iconic examples of contemporary times, the surviving silos of this industrial enterprise constitute a significant part of port architecture, opening up a broader reflection on their potential uses and future destinies.
2023-10-18T00:00:00+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10366Un manufatto ambiguo. Le contrastate vicende e i contradditori significati di un moderno mulino elettrico2024-01-02T15:35:45+00:00Renato Sansamaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
Istria was, for many aspects, a poor region after the annexation to Italy. The exclusion to wider commercial circuits, whose was part as a region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, worsened the agriculture. The prices of agriculture products lowered. Despite all this, some entrepeneurs were able to launch new initiatives, as the establishment of a company, the Societ. Istriana di Macinazione, in order to build up the first Istrian electric mill with a modern silo in the port of Pula. The timing of the operation, the mill was completed in 1941, was critical, and some problems arose after the end of the war.
2023-10-18T15:51:04+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10367I silos come cultural heritage. Gli Open Digital Archives per l’analisi dei processi di patrimonializzazione2024-01-02T15:35:44+00:00Maddalena Chimissomaddalena.chimisso@unimol.it
The process of the patrimonialization of cultural heritage starts with knowledge actions which constitute the initial stages of exploratory enquiries and mapping. Cataloguing is the subsequent stage when officially appointed bodies compile detailed catalogue records that converge into specific inventories and catalogues. The open access databases of these institutions are veritable Open Digital Archives where research can be carried out; they can provide both useful results for cultural heritage protection and enhancement policies and investigate, from a historical-critical perspective, the heritage processes that have affected a specific cultural asset. The paper proposes the results of an initial exploration of the Open Digital Archives of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (Italy), the Istituto del Patrimonio Cultural (Spain), the Direction du Patrimonio Culturel (Belgium) and the French Ministry of Culture’s Plateforme Ouverte du Patrimoine, focusing on silos, storage and stocking structures that characterize particular production landscapes.
2023-10-18T17:05:34+00:00##submission.copyrightStatement##http://www.serena.unina.it/index.php/os/article/view/10368Storia e memoria.
