Tristano Caracciolo and his “question” about nobility. The regis servitium in the Neapolitan 15th century

Abstract

The paper starts from the central position of the concept of regis servitium as a constitutive element of the Southern Italy Humanism’s thought about the theme of nobilitas, deepening the particular situation of Tristano Caracciolo. It catches both the aspects of originality and continuity in the political treatise tradition between the 15th and the 16th centuries. For this purpose it shows how the noble humanist Tristano Caracciolo, in contrast with the thesis of Bracciolini’s de vera nobilitate, has claimed a behavior model for the Neapolitan nobility in which the regis servitium is the condition of nobility, is the synonym of activism, is the workshop of glory and wealth.
