Abstract

The economic and commercial prosperity of Venice in the Later Middle Ages was based on an extensive network of international agreements, called pacta, signed with the Mediterranean partners in order to maintain free and safe traffic routes and to ensure freedom of movement for its merchants. The pacts formed the basis of ius or mos mercatorum and the international law of that time. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the Venetian pacts with the eastern Mediterranean, to outline their nature, forms, contents and effectiveness.
