Abstract

The discussion on Évelyne Patlagean’s volume centres on a comparison with the ideas forwarded by Marc Bloch. Particularly conscious of comparative perspectives, in his Société féodale the Alsatian historian proposed an interpretative model liable to be applied also to the Byzantine world, even though he removed the “Greek” and slavic middle ages from his research prospects. Patlagean adopts Bloch’s historiographic categories, whilst sustaining that the potential feudal development of the Byzantine world was blocked by the weight exercised by the ancient imperial tradition.
