The Constantinian question in the light of legal documents

Abstract

The work, inspired by a recent book by Alessandro Barbero on the emperor Constantine the Great, intends to highlight the importance of examining legal documents to shed light on various problematic aspects of the Constantinian kingdom. In particular, this article focuses on the study of some imperial constitution in which Constantine clearly condemns the superstitio of polytheistic paganism; at the same time, however, the emperor shows himself in an attitude of attention, of dialogue and, in many cases, of a real favor towards the Neoplatonic pagan culture. Not only among Christians, but also among the educated pagans, Constantine wants to find the basis of consent for his reign.
