The Religious Rome project. Roman monasticism: a blurred identity
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article illustrates the genesis of the Religious Rome project and provides a general overview. The history of Roman monasticism has yet to be written, at least in part. Until now, the relative paucity of edited sources coupled with the absence of the fonds of many important monastic institutions, which for various reasons have not come down to us, accounts for the difficulties in reconstructing the relationship between the monasteries and the city. Research is further complicated by the absence of narrative sources. On the other hand, we are better informed on the institutions of the Mendicant Orders, present in the city from the 1220s, although in this case most of the documentation is relative to the female communities.
