Abstract

The study of the inscriptions of San Salvatore di Brescia, in particular the inscription which mentions the Lombard king Desiderius, has reopened the question about the interpretation of the text. The new reading proposed in 2014, which has revised previous interpretations, dates the text to the late Lombard age. This paper upholds this new interpretation that attributes the commissioning to king Desiderius and queen Ansa. Finally, the epigraph is related to the Lom- bard practice of dedicatory inscriptions commissioned by royal patrons.
