Abstract

Research concerning foreign notaries who were accredited by the Roman Curia and employed after 1507, and their clients from all over Europe is seen to be a worthwhile endeavour. This research is possible largely thanks to the registration of legal transactions certified by the Col- lege of Archives’ writers. These transactions offer detailed insights into the social and economic developments and the the Roman Curia’s and the city’s appeal to visitors at a time of change in the wake the Sack of Rome and the Reformation. Personal networks show an ambivalent atti- tude, between desiring to keep one’s own identity and the wish to integrate into Roman society.
