Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between the notary and the ecclesiastical institutions, with particular attention to the chapters of the cathedrals of Northern Italy between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Taking into consideration the Chapters of Genoa, Verona, Vicenza, Bergamo, Belluno and Asti, the development of the production and conservation systems of the documentation is reconstructed in the transition phase from the parchment to the register. As a comparative element, the case of the Chapter of the cathedral of Trento is also considered, focusing on the development, at the beginning of the fourteenth century, of the series of the Instrumenta capitularia. Finally, the role of the clerics-notaries in the development of bureaucratic apparatuses and Chapter chancelleries is explained.
