Abstract

The information, supported by a long scholar tradition, that under the complex of Santa Maria della Vita in Naples there is a catacomb dedicated to san Vito, where a church entitled to the same saint once stood, has always been surrounded by uncertainty. Although the catacomb is still untraceable, the study, moved by the aim of clarifying the supporting sources, has achieved notable results, ascertaining the historical existence and the features of the primitive church, identifying numerous non-funerary underground cavities on side, as well as reporting to the attention of the researchers a forgotten image of the Virgin, coming from pre-existing underground rooms of the convent.
