Abstract

In the second half of the 19th century and in the first decades of the following century, histori- ans and literary scholars in the cities of the Veneto region dealt intensively with Dante and his works. Much research was dedicated to the traces of the poet’s presence in this or that place. The role of Verona, Dante’s city par excellence, was central. However, one theme imposed itself: studies on the De monarchia, in connection with the problem of the relationship between State and Church. This gave rise to debates and contrasts between scholars in the Catholic-liberal tradition (such as Carlo Cipolla) and secular scholars (such as Gerolamo Biscaro).
