Abstract

Danteism in Italy between the 19th and 20th centuries was a phenomenon of great cultural significance. This essay chooses to look at it from a limited point of view: the perspective in which some historians who contributed to the renewal of Italian medieval studies (Salvemini, Arias, Luzzatto, Volpe) read Dante. Dante “out of his time” or Dante “national” are the two main positions. The article also reconstructs the complicated publishing history of some important essays and provides information on a cycle of lectures by Gaetano Salvemini on the Bianchi and the Neri (1920-21).
