Abstract

In the literature debate concerning the Italian cities in the period from late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages the ‘Byzantine variable’ deserves a particular position. The relevant role of the proto-Byzantine Mediterranean’s permanence in the administrative, social, economic and cultural system during the transformation of many urban centres needs a new analysis and evaluation. Such a remark calls for a critical re-thinking of many traditional issues and the reappraisal of a methodology for new interpretative models which can better fit the complexity of the phenomenon which is going to be investigated.
