The Southern Lombardy and commercial relations in the Mediterranean area: the case of Salerno

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to recover the written testimonies – both narrative and documentary sources – and also archaeological evidences about the role of Lombard Salerno in the Mediterranean commerces between VIIIth and XIth centuries, beginning from the regency of the Beneventan prince Arechi II who, after the Frank conquest of the Lombard kingdom, developed the economy and the urban structure of the maritime city. In this text we tried also to examine the real existence of a port in Salerno for the early medieval centuries and the location of the markets in the city and in the neighboring territory. Further investigations regards the commercial activism – rather modest – of Lombard Salerno in the exchanges with the near Byzantine provinces, the Saracen colonies in the peninsular South Italy and Sicily.
