«Contra morem solitum»: an archival conflict in Savoy (1397). Some thoughts on public written records, the power of writing and public authorities in a late medieval principality

Abstract

This essay starts from a conflict of interests which exploded at the very end of the 14th century in Savoy, between the sindaci of the administrative capital of the principality, Chambéry, and a group of high level officers of the prince, coming mostly from the financial chamber in Chambéry. This communication focuses mostly on the power of the written public records and on the increasing relevance of preserving them in the context of a principality which was at the moment in the middle of a significant political and institutional growth. This « archival » conflict since now mostly unknown allows us to consider carefully the meaning of the practice of writing for a prince, and the importance of what was a real battle about the control of the documentary memory.
