Abstract

The impact of the papal officers’ decisions on the cities of the Papal State they were supposed to govern are probably one of the best apprehension points of those bad politics generally summarising the attitude of the Avignonese papacy towards Central Italy. How was structured the production of the written decisions of the legates sent to govern the papal State in the second half of the Fourteenth Century? What consequences had the development of their correspondence on the documentary system performed by the communes? In what measure the collating strategies adopted by the cities were significant of their political sensibility? These are the main questions approached in this essay directed to study the confrontation between the secular experiments of production and conservation of writs of the Church and of the communes, in this case of Orvieto and Spoleto.
