A note about Rodulfus Glaber

Abstract

This paper reassesses a few commonplaces about Rodulfus Glaber’s work. In particular, it questions the assumption that his work is the expression of Cluny’s culture. Instead, the dimension of a three-culture monk stands out in Rodulfus Glaber: in addition to Cluny’s culture, the one of Auxerre, where he had been educated, and the one of Fruttuaria, since he had lived at Saint Benigne of Dijon for ten years. Hence, the profile of a learned, sensitive monk, open to the cultural suggestions of his time, when Cluny was an unavoidable lure, comes to light.
