Abstract

In May 1305, the cities of Lucca and Florence entered into war against the city of Pistoia, they conquered a large pat of the castles on its territory and put the city under siege. The event entered into a very complex context of the struggles between the factions that tore apart the Tuscan community. After almost a year, characterised rather than by fighting but by an economic block that deprived the city of food ration supplies and put the citizens to a tough test, the city surrendered, and the walls were torn down, and its centuries of subjection to Florence began. Other than these events, the essay also touches upon their “memory”, as it was represented by the reporters of Lucca and Florence of the fourteenth century (Marchionne di Coppo Stefani, il Compagni, il Villani, etc.); while from the civil memory of Pistoia this decisive moment in the history of the city was completely removed.
