Abstract

In 1331 the commune of Florence resolved to fund the Works of the city’s cathedral on a permanent basis. In the following decades, the revenues drew upon three different kinds of sources: direct communal funds (from specific budget items), indirect communal funds (transfers to the Works from various revenues such as taxes on wills, dues on fiscal and criminal pardons), commercial activities of the Works. The second part of the essay focuses on the rich records for the second half of the fifteenth century, which are elaborated and tabulated in the appendix.
