Diplomatic relations between the King Hugh of Provence and the caliph 'Abd ar-Ramân III: Christian sources and Arab sources in comparison

Abstract
The paper analyzes a passage from the chronicle of Ibn Hayyan: the truce granted by the caliph Abd ar-Rahman III to some Christian rulers around 940 at Barcelona. King was among them italic Hugh of Provence, which obtained some guarantees for the italics merchants and their goods. It was the beginning of a regular trade between Italy and Andalusian courtyard and the merchants of Amalfi and Sardinia were the first to take advantage of that agreement. Actually, for the first time they carried some brocades and silver ingots to Cordova. But two other important data emerge from a comparison of the available sources: the significant role played by King Hugh, who, like his mother Bertha of Tuscany, attempted to extend the exchanges in the western Mediterranean; the important function of Barcelona and Catalonia rulers as intermediaries between the Christian West and al-Andalus.
