The Land of Romuald and Peter Damiani

Abstract

The history of the land admits of two complementary kinds of inquiry: an analysis of the processes affecting the structures on it (its settlements, productions, etc.), and that of the inhabitants' own perceptions of the places they inhabit. The recent historiography on the land of Romuald, of Peter Damian and of their monastic congregations has developed along these very two directions, the history of structures and that of cultural representations, with combinations of both. Here we will concentrate on cultural aspects.
