Exodus as a re-articulation of film style
Jonas Carpignano and the European cinema of the 21st century
Abstract
The essay intends to provide a mapping of contemporary European cinema, focusing on recurring styles and themes, and questioning the possible codification of a transnational style. It considers the three films by the young Italian director Jonas Carpignano – Mediterranea (2015), A Ciambra (2017), A Chiara (2021) – and analyses them as paradigmatic examples of the forms of narrative rewriting of the Exodus (from emigration to epos of the mythical tale) between neorealism and the codes of popular cinema.
