Myth and tragedy in the post-medium era. On the evolution of audiovisual narrative: the case of “Nocturnal Animals”
Abstract
This paper analyzes Nocturnal Animals (2016) a movie by Tom Ford, from Austin Wright’s masterpiece novel Tony and Susan. The work shows the formal solutions that allow Ford to build up a movie that intersects a narrative with two storylines, underlining the fundamental semantic tensions between them. Eventually the meaning of this operation is explained in the milieu of the so-called “post-medium era” (with its implications on audiovisual narrative) by creating a parallel between the movie and the structure of Greek tragedy, that lied upon two plans of narration with similar characteristics: the Chorus and the myth.
