Urban Planners with Renewable Energy Skills

Abstract

There is no much tradition to combine urban and energy planning together to fight Climate Change even though energy production with fossil fuels is the main cause to the Change. Pilot training of urban planners in five EU countries such Finland, Germany, Hungary, Spain and the United Kingdom to understand the basics of renewable energy sources (RES) and energy efficiency (EE) has been carried out during 2011-2012 under co-financing of Intelligent Energy Europe. Organizing such pilot training was challenging for many reasons, but the outcome can be consdered highly statisfactory, based on the recorded feedback of trainees and other stakeholders. The project encourages other planning schools in Europe to learn from the experience and to use the published training materials available in ten languages in their curricula.

Author Biographies

Arto Emerik Nuorkivi, Aalto University

Dr. Nuorkivi (1953), graduated from Aalto University (successor of Helsinki University of Technology), has been working as consultant on rehabilitation and development of communal energy systems in more than 30 countries and in more than 100 cities outside his native country, Finland. The projects have been financed either by IFIs such as the World Bank, EBRD, KfW and NEFCO or by individual European governments. Technically, the projects have comprised district heating, cogeneration of heat and power (CHP), renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in general. Depending on the particular project, Dr. Nuorkivi has been responsible for technical, environmental, economical and institutional issues, often as project manager. During his carrier, Dr. Nuorkivi has issued six books about research and development of district heating and CHP as well as corporate social responsibility for various institutions such as the Nordic Council of Ministers, the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Energy Charter Secretariat, the Baltic Sea Region Energy Co-operation (BASREC), Uusimaa Regional Council (Helsinki capital region) and Helsinki University of Technology.

Anna-Maija Ahonen, Project manager - Aalto PRO Aalto University

Ms. Ahonen has been working as the project manager of the UP-RES project. She has several years’ experience on European level training development projects and continuing professional development programs. Ahonen has also worked as pedagogical consultant and trainer in former Helsinki University of Technology (currently part of Aalto University).
