Abstract

This article aims at examining two papal letters sent to the religious and political representatives of the Venetian lagoon during the iconoclast controversy with Byzantium and the clash with the Lombards in the first half of the 8th century. The intention is first, to prove that one of them was altered at a later date; secondly to provide certain attribution to the other, and to de- fine as precisely as possible when these letters were drawn up. To do so, I will first consider the historical context and past literature that has tackled the letters (especially at the end of the 19th century). Finally, a new hypothesis will be suggested, adding new elements to the debate that previous scholarship has not considered.
