Abstract
The essay (Torquato Tasso and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s melancholy through the exegesis by Jean Starobinski) analyzes Rousseau’s numerous quotes and obsessive identifi- cation with the Italian poet Torquato Tasso, which are rediscovered inthe essay Rousseau and Tasso by Jean Starobinski, and which represent the introduction for the further studies of theGenevan critic. Retracing the human, intellectual and literary relationships between Rousseau and Tasso, two literatus who, in the Eighteenth and the Nineteenth Century, shared depression and melancholy, the essay enlightens aboutStarobinski's methods and critical look.
