Cristiani novelli di Terra di Bari nel secolo XVI in due privilegi inediti di Giovinazzo e Bisceglie

Abstract

Edizione di due privilegi, inediti, concessi agli inizi del Cinquecento alle università pugliesi di Bisceglie e di Giovinazzo. I privilegi contengono nuovi dati relativi al rapporto delle due città con gli ebrei e i cristiani novelli, che qualche anno prima erano stati espulsi dalla vicina Trani, sede di una delle più importanti comunità ebraiche in Terra di Bari. L'analisi dei documenti mostra come in quel periodo "neofiti" e "mercanti" fossero considerati quasi sinonimi, soffermandosi quindi sulle suppliche e i Placet confrontandoli con i privilegi coevi e di simile natura concessi ad altre città vicine. Attenziona particolare è dedicata ai cristiani novelli di Giovinazzo, sui quali vengono forniti alcuni dettagli circa la loro effettiva conversione al cattolicesimo e le attività svolte.

New Christians in 16^th Century Terra di Bari, according to two Unpublished Privileges from Giovinazzo and Bisceglie

This paper presents the edition of two unpublished privileges granted to the Apulian cities of Bisceglie and Giovinazzo in the early 16^th century. The documents contain data regarding the connection of the two cities with Jews and New Christians, who had been expelled from the nearby town of Trani a few years earlier. In addition to the analysis of these two manuscripts, a number of other documents are also studied, including the pleas and Placet concerning the relations of the two cities with Jews and new Christians, and the privileges and contemporary acts of similar nature granted to other nearby towns. The analysis is particularly detailed for the New Christian of Giovinazzo, for whom we also possess information about their actual conversion to Christianity and related activities.
