Climate migration: reasons for research
Abstract
This essay is developed within the framework of the CLIMOVE project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program. It introduces a compendium of studies on the theme of climate migration. Drawing upon data from the most recent reports, the Authors first and foremost underline the need for an innovative transdisciplinary approach, capable of addressing the complexity of an increasingly significant challenge, incorporating a gender perspective in the analysis and proposals. The Italian context is cited as a concrete example of the ways in which a country is facing with this challenge through legislative initiative. However, in the current gap of international legal protection, the safeguarding of the fundamental human rights involved predominantly hinges on the arguments developed by judges in the context of decisions on individual cases. While this case-law brings important innovation, it is not sufficient to ensure legal protection for forced climate migrants
