The role of cultural heritage in the winding path of European integration
Abstract
An intimate bond is found between the identity of a country and its cultural heritage. As a matter of fact, cultural heritage is an expression of the collective memory of a people and, as the wording of Italian Constitution’s Article 9 makes clear, it also has a significant impact on the definition of a community’s future cultural identity. Starting from these premises, the paper explores the role cultural heritage can play in the construction and strengthening of a different identity, the identity of the European union. Current European policies and initiatives in cultural field seem to mirror the ambivalence of a supranational organization that intends to promote an "ever closer union among peoples", while preserving their national identities
